Dave Koh's Journey of Faith

I’ll never forget your smile

Most photographers are overly concerned with their equipment and technique. In doing so, the true spirit of photography was lost.   I am fortunate enough to use some of the best camera and lens available for my work and personal hobby. Nevertheless to me it’s not the 1D series camera, the L lenses or the Photoshop plug-ins at my disposal. It’s the spirit and a heart to bless someone, even strangers, with a moment of happiness that inspires me to photograph.

I love to take photos of people; my wedding couples, their families and friends, my friends. My fav subject is people I do not know. You see equipments are but lifeless until you give it a purpose for it’s existence.   The moment of happiness I refer to, and I believe you must have experience this:   At a public event, you point your camera at a little girl, a couple or a father with his son, and they gladly smile for you. Though they may not get to see their photo, they still smile for you with a slight grim of appreciation on their face.

I believe there’s this unspoken universal recognition in everyone of us: When someone takes a photo of us we feel important. We feel cherished, that someone actually care enough to take a photo of us therefore we smile, believing that the photo will certainly turn out very good indeed.

As a photographer I care very much about the result, how my photo will turn out. As a person I care about my subject’s feeling. If I can make a person happy just by clicking my camera, I wish I can do this till my time is up.

Attached are some shots taken during last week’s NDP preview show. I will never forget these happy faces.
